Thanks so much for writing up all of this, Will! Lots of great info here. I'm really interested in the streaming app - the cable authentication part sucks, just like it does for HBOGo, but what can you do. It's a step in the right direction. Curious, like you, whether it will be just a duplicate of the channel or whether there'll be some level of "on-demand" to it. Being about to stream TCM's library when it's convenient for me rather than when it's on TV would be KILLER.

I also didn't know several of these other things - like that TCM no longer has straight-up access to the Time Warner/MGM/RKO library. Hearing about how that works now was really revealing. It was also interesting to hear that the cable companies don't want TCM to ever have commercials! Not caring about ratings is pretty awesome. Hopefully that will always be the case. It certainly makes the programming better.

[…] The 3-D remake of this film, ‘House Of Wax” (1953) would certainly be a big draw at the festival after the popular screenings of 3-D classics “Hondo” and “Dial M For Murder” this year, but I prefer the original. Lionel Atwill stars as the wax museum sculptor disfigured in a fire who goes insane and begins to tomb living women in wax. Glenda Farrell is the archetypal wisecracking female reporter who uncovers the horrific facts. See Will McKinley’s review of Film Forum’s 1933 Pre-Code Festival, which included this movie, at this link. […]

Wonderful post Will. I particularly enjoyed reading all about TCM venturing into some kind of streaming service. I really wish TCM would offer a subscription based streaming service so one could bypass cable, but as you explained so well, that would be complicated matter - but one can hope.

East coastand west coast is good but it might mess up our #TCMParty. It's nice that we're all watching the same thing at the same time. Even though everyone might get both we'd still get split up:(

Thanks Jeff. One thing I left out from this piece, because of space (like 4,000 words wasn't long enough already):

Summer Under the Stars in August will feature more character actors

Tabesh said that the annual, star-specific showcase in August is “one of the most popular things we do.” And he shared some plans for this year’s edition:
“This year you’ll see several more character actors being featured on Summer Under the Stars; there are a lot there that deserve recognition who are overlooked,” he said, adding that this programming decision was based on viewer feedback.

As for a trip to Monument Valley, I am so in for that! Who's with me?

Hi Will,

Thanks for the backstage view of how TCM is structured. It is exciting to hear what they have poised for later this year!

On another note, I would encourage the TCM Party community to continue to partake in blog events like the "character actors" piece from last year. The subjects are endless and there is a well of talent to draw from.

Finally, if the timing is right and there are some folks up for a jaunt to Monument Valley...well, saddle up, pilgrims! I would love to see our TCMParty friends document the classic film locales they have visited or stumbled upon. Heck, while touring Pittsburgh a couple of weeks ago, I swung by the Evans City Cemetery where George Romero shot the opening scenes of NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD!

Thanks again!
